eBook Technologies’ Suite of Licensable EPUB and EPUB-Related Technology Continues to Lead the Industry in Standard Conformance and Performance

LA JOLLA, CA - November 11, 2009 - EPUB is the electronic publication standard developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). It is achieving wide and enthusiastic adoption in the eBook market. EPUB enables the creation and transport of reflowable digital books and other types of content as single-file digital publications that are interoperable between disparate EPUB-compliant reading devices and applications. EPUB encompasses a content markup standard (Open Publication Structure - OPS), a packaging standard (Open Packaging Format - OPF), and a container standard (Open Container Format - OCF).

eBook Technologies, Inc (ETI) senior staff have played pivotal roles design and development of EPUB. Garth Conboy (ETI’s President), John Rivlin (ETI’s CEO), and Brady Duga (ETI Senior Engineer) chaired and vice-chaired the IDPF technical working groups that designed the EPUB standard and its predecessor standards.

ETI has developed and made available for license the industry leading suite of EPUB and EPUB-related technology. ETI’s EPUB layout and rendering system is the most highly functional and standards conformant available in the industry. Complex “print quality” content can be presented using the paginated rendering engine. Advanced features and extensions include: headers, footers, absolute positioning, columns, @media, CSS3 additions, vertical kanji, continuation markers, SVG, embedded Web views, embedded fonts, Knuth Plass line breaking, and sub-publications.

ETI has refined its UI technology to be fast, elegant and extremely easy to use. ETI has significant experience working with chipset and embedded systems vendors to maximize performance. For instance, optimizing E-Ink rendering has been an area of particular focus and strength in its current, non-disclosed work. Further, ETI has significant expertise in WebKit porting and application. One technology instance uses a WebKit rendered JavaScript/HTML UI around the core paginated EPUB rendering system, while also supporting active WebKit/HTML5 views within otherwise paginated EPUB publications.

The trend toward publishers and device makers to support the EPUB standard is growing fast. The majority of device manufacturers, including Sony, Barnes and Noble, iRiver, Plastic Logic, and most recently, Apple, have embraced the EPUB format.

ETI provides the leading end-to-end electronic book platform offering a full range of EPUB/eBook products and services that are unrivaled in the marketplace. The company has both deep industry knowledge and the end-to-end technology components to support the entire electronic book publishing value chain: content acquisition, conversion, wholesaling, retailing, distribution, and consumption. ETI’s technology suite encompasses: device-based reading systems, content layout and presentation, content distribution, bookshelf management, bookstore implementation, and eCommerce. The entire suite of EPUB and EPUB-related technology is available for license.
